History of the Labrador Retriever Club of SA Inc.
The Labrador Retriever Club of South Australia was formed in 1960. It was originally known by the name of the Labrador and Retriever Club of South Australia.
The Club colours decided upon by the original committee were emerald green, nut brown and sky blue. Today they are Black and Yellow.
In the early days the Club received a great deal of assistance from the Labrador Club of Victoria and some of their members, Jim and Sadie McGeachy, Jack Pontin and Charlie Allison came over to S.A. to help with the initial establishment of the S.A. Club and also came over to South Australia to help with the first Championship Show which took place at the home of Jean and Charlie Fleetwood in Salisbury on 9th June, 1962.
The entry at the Show included 62 Labradors, 2 Golden Retrievers and 2 Curly coated Retrievers.
The first Non-slip Retrieving Trial was held on 22nd August, 1961 at Tolderol the property of Mick and Jenni Verco at Langhorne Creek.
On 23rd March, 1966 a Special Meeting of the Club was called to change the name from the Labrador and Retriever Club to the name we have today LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB OF S.A. Our Incorporation came much later as a recommendation from the S.A. Canine Association.
A great deal of emphasis was placed upon the dual purpose of the dogs in that it was thought that they should be good enough specimens to win in the show ring and be capable of performing well at the retrieving trial. In the early days Labradors did do extremely well at both disciplines.
The first Life Memberships were awarded in 1974 to Charlie and Jean Fleetwood ,Sydney Welbourn and Cecil Adkins.
